Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - With just two days remaining in the regular season, three North Division teams are still in the running to claim the final spot in the 2010 American Association playoffs. Lincoln, Sioux City and Wichita are still mathematically alive in the playoff chase. The possible scenarios are as follows:

NORTH DIVISION RACE: Sioux Falls leads Wichita by two games with two left to play. One more Sioux Falls win or one more Wichita loss clinches division titles in both halves for the Pheasants, meaning the wild card race will determine their first-round opponent. Wichita must win their final two games and have Sioux Falls lose their final two games to earn a tie for the division title, which would clinch a playoff spot for the Wingnuts.

LINCOLN, SIOUX CITY: Assuming Sioux Falls wins the division title outright, both the Saltdogs and Explorers face the same scenario as they play each other this weekend. The two teams are tied for the wild card lead. If either team wins both games this weekend, they will finish in sole possession of first place in the wild card standings. If the two teams split the next two games, they will finish tied for the wild card lead. In that instance, the Saltdogs and Explorers would meet in a one-game playoff Monday in Sioux City. The Explorers would host the game thanks to a better head-to-head record in 2010.

WICHITA: The Wingnuts can no longer claim a wild card berth. They trail both Lincoln and Sioux City by one game in the wild card standings, but since the Saltdogs and Explorers are playing each other, the best Wichita could do is to end the season in a three-way wild card tie with Lincoln and Sioux City. In that scenario, the Wingnuts would be eliminated because they have the worst head-to-head record among the three teams (while the other two teams would still play Monday in Sioux City). As mentioned above, Wichita's only chance of making the playoffs is to earn a tie for the division title.
