Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants came in with a bang and out with a whimper on Saturday night.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Pheasants' bats went quiet in a 3-2 loss to the St. Paul Saints. With a win, the Pheasants could have knocked Wichita out of a potential spot. But the Pheasants' magic number for a second-half division title remains at one. There is one game left in the regular season.
The Pheasants pitching staff threw remarkably well, combining for 12 strikeouts while limiting the Saints to four hits. But the offense could not provide the support. Ben Rosen, Ryan Grant and Matt Zachary combined for 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of Travis Kane (5-6), extending the bullpen's scoreless streak to 13 2/3 innings.
With the game tied at 2-2, Kane walked the first two Saints batters in the sixth and was lifted for Rosen. Brent Krause then drove in the winning run. Kane took the loss despite holding the Saints to three hits and striking out a season-high seven batters.
Beau Torbert singled home Joe Anthonsen and Brandon Sing followed with a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the first two Sioux Falls runs. The Saints evened the game with a two-run home run from Josh Burrus in the fourth, his eighth of the year.
Zach Peterson (7-6) pitched eight innings in the win. After the troublesome first inning, he yielded just five hits and no runs to the Pheasants. Joe D'Allesandro allowed the tying run to reach in the ninth but then retired Anthonsen and Tim Hutting to end the ballgame.
The Pheasants enter the final game of the regular season on Sunday with a playoff opponent yet to be determined. Lincoln, Sioux City and Wichita are still in the hunt.
The Pheasants can clinch the second-half division title at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday, August 29. It's Family Fun in the Sunday, where kids can run the bases after the game and players will be on the field for postgame autographs.
The Pheasants are members of the American Association, a 10-team independent professional baseball league playing its fifth season this summer. Individual and group ticket information is available by calling (605) 333-0179. Fans can also visit the Pheasants at www.sfpheasants.com.
