Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-16) four-game winning streak came to an end when the Lincoln Saltdogs (16-10) scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull away with an 8-4 win over the Birds.

The Canaries drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Joe Anthonsen doubled up the left-field line to lead-off the game. Anthonsen moved to third on a groundout by Tim Hutting, and then scored on a groundout by Cody Haerther. After a half-inning, the Canaries were ahead early, 1-0.

Lincoln went ahead in the second inning. Rafael Alvarez singled and Gavin Dickey walked to put two men on base. With one out, Brandon Jones singled to score Alvarez, tying the game 1-1, and putting Dickey on third. Dickey scored on a single by Josh Burrus, and the Saltdogs led 2-1 after two innings of play.

The Birds immediately tied the game with a run in the third. J.D. Reininger doubled to open the inning. Reininger got to third on a groundout by Ken Lup and scored on a single by Anthonsen. Reininger's run tied the game, 2-2.

The Canaries went ahead in the fifth inning. With two outs, Tim Hutting, Cody Haerther, and Beau Torbert combined for three consecutive singles. Torbert's hit plated Hutting to give the Canaries the lead for a second time, 3-2.

Lincoln scored twice to re-take the lead in the sixth inning. A single by Alvarez and a double by Dickey, put two men in scoring position with nobody out. Shea McFeely followed with an infield single to bring home Alvarez and tie the game, 3-3. After Brandon Jones walked to load the bases, Burrus hit a one-out ground ball up the middle. Burrus used his speed to stay out of a double play, allowing Dickey to score and give Lincoln a 4-3 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the seventh. Anthonsen got on base with a single, and took off for second on a pick-off throw by Lincoln starting pitcher Zac Cline. The relay to second from first baseman Phil Hawke was dropped by shortstop Albenis Machado. The error on Machado kept Anthonsen on base. Hutting then drove home Anthonsen with a single up the right-field line to knot the score, 4-4.

Lincoln pulled away for the win in the eighth inning. With two on and two out, Albenis Machado hit a fly ball to shallow left-field. Canaries left-fielder Cody Haerther ran a step too far coming in for the ball, and in reaching up to make the catch Cody dropped the ball. The error on Haerther left Machado safe at first while Tycen Povey reached third base and McFeely scored to give Lincoln the lead, 5-4. Phil Hawke drove in Povey and Machado with a two-run single to extend the Lincoln lead, 7-4, and Hawke scored on a single by Steven Alexander for the 8-4 final.

Travis Kane (3-9) was saddled with the loss in allowing four runs, all unearned, on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Adam Daniels (5-2) got the win in relief throwing 1.2 innings without allowing a run.

The Canaries continue the weekend set with the first-place Lincoln Saltdogs on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday, August 11, when they will begin a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints. Tuesday's game will be a "Reading Program Day" at the ballpark.
