Wichita Wingnuts News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux City Explorers 7-2 at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

Wichita, who entered the game 9-1 against the Explorers this season, grabbed an early run on an RBI single from Greg Porter. A key rundown play in the bottom of the second inning, executed by Steve Pearson, Joe Muich, Michael Thompson, and Josh Horn prevented the tying run from scoring.

After a leadoff single by Michael Thompson in the fourth, Joe Muich doubled into the left field corner to score Thompson from first and give the Wingnuts a 2-0 lead. Patrick Brooks drew a walk against starter Ryan Harris to put runners on first and second. Brenan Herrera then hit another double down the left field line to score Muich. Harris threw a wild pitch that brought in Brooks and moved Herrera to third. Josh Horn plated Herrera on a sacrifice fly to left-center to make it 5-0.

Greg Porter and Dustan Mohr hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the seventh inning. Porter finished the night with four base hits, marking his 34th multi-hit game of the season.

The offensive support was plenty for Adam Cowart who threw seven shutout innings allowing just two hits. Cowart struck out three and walked one and needed just 77 pitches for the win.

The Wingnuts have won 10 straight road games against Sioux City dating back to last year and are 8-0 at Lewis and Clark Park in 2009.

The Wingnuts and Explorers continue their series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Will Savage takes the Sioux City mound for the first time since his no-hitter over the X's on June 23rd. The Explorers go with lefty Trevor Fox. The Wingnuts return home on Tuesday, August 18th when they host the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. The 75th annual NBC World Series continues at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium through August 15th.
