Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs prevailed in a pitchers' duel on Sunday, beating Sioux City 1-0 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln finishes the regular season with a 51-45 record, and is in position to claim a wild card berth to the playoffs.

Saltdogs starter Chris Cullen (5-6) turned in his best outing all season, tossing a complete-game shutout and allowing only five hits. Cullen walked the first two batters he faced, but settled down and kept Sioux City off-balance the rest of the day. The righty walked three and struck out five, induced a pair of inning-ending double plays, and caught a line drive with the tying run on second for the final out of the game.

Lincoln managed just four hits against Sioux City starter David Welch (8-6), but one of them proved to be decisive. Brandon Jones led off the fifth inning with a solo home run, his 15th of the season, to provide the only run of the entire game. Welch struck out eight in the game, including four strikeouts in the fifth inning, but still lost to the Saltdogs for the first time after beating them three times earlier this season.

The Saltdogs end the regular season in sole possession of the wild card lead, two games better than Sioux City, and a game and a half ahead of Wichita with the Wingnuts still to play their Sunday evening contest. Lincoln now must wait on the results of St. Paul at Sioux Falls, and El Paso at Wichita. If Sioux Falls wins or Wichita loses, Lincoln makes the playoff via the wild card. If Sioux Falls loses and Wichita wins, Wichita wins a share of the North Division title and eliminates the Saltdogs.
