SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 29, 2010) - The 2010 season came to an end for the St. Paul Saints and they fell just short of the Sioux Falls Pheasants 9-7 on Sunday evening at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Pheasants, who wrapped up the second half title with the win and claimed both halves, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead getting an RBI triple by Reggie Abercrombie followed by an RBI single from Beau Torbert to make it 2-0 in the first. They tacked on a run in the third when Hunter Jobes tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Gus Milner.
The Saints came back in the third when Steve Mays singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by right fielder Milner. Josh Alley singled home Mays to make it 3-1 and advanced to second on the throw home. With two outs Ole Sheldon singled home Alley to make it 3-2.
In the fourth the Pheasants opened up the lead to 6-2 as Jobes walked and moved to second on a single from Milner. A wild pitch moved the two runners up and Eddy Rodriguez singled them both home to make it 5-2. Rodriguez would score on a Tim Hutting single.
In the fifth the Pheasants scored two more when Brandon Sing led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jobes. Milner then singled and scored on Rodriguez' double to make it 8-2.
The Saints didn't quit though, scoring three in the sixth as Sheldon led off with a walk and scored on Jason Cooper's league tying 38th double of the season. Brent Krause then hit a grounder back to the mound, but pitcher Ryan Rodriguez tried to get Cooper going to third and threw the ball away allowing Cooper to score and sending Krause to second. Krause scored on a single by Gerard Haran to make it 8-5.
With the Saints down 9-5 in the eighth Sheldon and Cooper led off with back-to-back singles. With one out Josh Burrus doubled them both home cutting the deficit to two. Haran then hit a deep drive to right-center, but Abercrombie was able to track it down for the second out of the inning. Steve Butler bounced back to the mound to end the inning.
In the ninth the Saints sent the tying run to the plate when Alley singled with one out. Brandon Carter fouled out to short and Sheldon flew out to center to end the game.
The Saints finished the season with an overall record of 45-51 and were 24-24 in the second half.
