Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the El Paso Diablos 16-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.
Coupled with Sioux Falls' loss to St. Paul, the Wingnuts remain alive in the second half division race. The Wingnuts are one game out of first place with one game remaining in 2010.
The Wingnuts tied a club record with 16 runs scored, while pounding out 22 hits in the win. Carlos Rivera tied a club record with five hits, including two home runs and five RBI.
The Wingnuts scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take early control of the game. Ryan Patterson led off with a four-pitch walk from Diablos' starter Dustin Birosak. Patterson went to third on a hit-and-run single by Cesar Suarez. On the next pitch, Jorge Cortes crushed a three-run home run to right field to give the Wingnuts a 3-0 lead. Carlos Rivera followed with an opposite-field solo blast that hit off the upper part of the scoreboard in left-center.
Raul Gonzalez doubled to left-center and went to third on a groundball single from Jorge Delgado. William Buzhardt relieved Birosak, who did not retire a batter, and issued a walk to Michael Bell. Jeff Christy singled through the middle to score Gonzalez and make it 5-0.
Birosak took the loss, and was charged with five earned runs on five hits. Kevin Angelle earned the win, giving up two earned runs on just three hits in 5.2 IP. Angelle struck out eight and walked two, winning his third consecutive start. Angelle retired 10 batters in a row from the third inning into the sixth, and struck out the side in order in the fifth.
After Rico Santana hit a solo home run in the top of the second, the Wingnuts plated three more runs in their half. Suarez was hit by a pitch leading, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundball to first by Cortes. Rivera singled to left-center field to make it 6-1. A Gonzalez single and another walk to Bell loaded the bases, setting up a two-run single to center by Christy that opened an 8-1 lead. Rivera added another RBI single in the third.
With a runner on first and two outs in the fourth, Ryan Patterson homered to deep left field to increase the Wingnuts lead to 11-1. It was the 100th home run of Patterson's career. Suarez singled and scored on a double to left-center from Cortes. River collected his fourth RBI of the night when he chased home Cortes with a line drive single to center.
Leading 13-2 in the seventh, Rivera led off with another home run to left-center for his fifth hit of the night. Joseph Spiers pinch-hit for Gonzalez and doubled down the left field line. Spiers went to third on an infield single from Delgado and scored on a sacrifice fly from Bell. Delgado scored the Wingnuts' 16th run of the night on Josh Horn's RBI double.
