El Paso Diablos News Release
Wichita, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts did everything they could do to try and extend their season as they beat the Diablos 4-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday night. Unfortunately for the Wingnuts it ended up being the season finale for them and El Paso. Wichita will miss out on the playoffs because Sioux Falls was able to win their game which officially eliminated the Wingnuts.
Wichita took the lead with a two out single from Jorge Cortes in the third inning. El Paso tied the game the next half inning when Rico Santana had a lead-off double and scored later in the inning on a throwing error. Wichita took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth on a Michael Bell two run home run. The Diablos kept the game close scoring a run in the fifth on a Jeff Vincent single. Wichita gained their two run lead back with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Diablos were able to threaten down the stretch getting the tying runs on base in the last two innings but couldn't come up with the needed big hits.
Amad Stephens (5-10) was the man to make the start on the final game of the season, his second straight start against his former team. He pitched well but ended up giving up four runs in six innings. Stephens fell victim to an offense which gave him very little help. Adam Cowart (7-7) got the win for Wichita tossing seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits and five strike outs.
El Paso was able to outhit the Nuts collecting ten hits to their eight. It was just the fourth time in their last 13 games they were able to get double digit hits. They missed out on a big opportunity, getting runners to the corners with no outs in the second inning but two strike outs and a ground out ended that threat. Rico Santana went 2-4 with a double. Santana ends the season in great shape getting hits in his last six games with five of those six being multi hit games. Jeff Vincent went 2-4 with an RBI. Bryon Smith also turned in a good 2-4 performance.
El Paso finishes their 2010 season in last place and with just a 31-63 record.
