Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Lincoln Saltdogs earned a victory on Opening Day 2009, defeating the Wichita Wingnuts 5-3 Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Lincoln improves to 5-4 all-time in season openers.
The Saltdogs took the lead for good in the fourth inning, right after the Wingnuts had tied the game at two. Matt Maloney led off the inning with a triple, and scored one out later on a sacrifice fly by Deacon Burns. Albenis Machado and Josh Burrus hit back-to-back singles, and Phil Hawke followed with an RBI single to put the Dogs up 4-2.
Jim Paduch (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six Wichita batters. Jarrett Gardner made the start for Lincoln, but threw 75 pitches through four innings and was taken out before he could qualify for the win. Carlos Guevara pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save. For Wichita, starter Gabe Medina (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs over his four innings.
Lincoln drew first blood in the contest, scoring twice in the top of the third on a Juan Richardson fielder's choice and a sac fly by Shawn McGill. Wichita scored twice in the bottom half of the frame, though, on a two-run double by Brenan Herrera. The Dogs added an insurance run on Richardson's RBI single in the top of the seventh, though the Wingnuts earned it back in the bottom half of the inning when Greg Porter earned an RBI single of his own.
Machado, Burrus, Richardson and McGill all finished with two hits apiece for Lincoln, with Machado and Burrus each scoring two runs as well. Richardson also drove in a pair of runs.
The teams play game two of their four-game series Friday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. Lefty Vince Davis makes the start for Lincoln, and Wichita counters with righty Will Savage.
The 2009 Lincoln Saltdogs season begins on May 14 in Wichita, with the home opener scheduled for May 22 against Fort Worth. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
