Lincoln Saltdogs News Release

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs announced on Thursday that right-handed pitcher Angel Castro has been signed by the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Lincoln moved quickly to fill its roster vacancy, re-signing right-handed pitcher Khalid Afify, who had been released by the team on Monday.

Castro appeared in two spring training games for Lincoln this year, pitching a scoreless inning each time. The Dominican native spent the past three seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization, reaching as high as Class AA Erie in 2008. The Phillies plan to send Castro to their extended spring training for a few weeks, before assigning him to a minor-league affiliate. Angel becomes the 22nd different player to be signed from the Saltdogs to a major league organization.

Afify, who was originally signed by Lincoln on the eve of spring training this year, also appeared in two exhibition games. He threw a scoreless inning in his first outing, and allowed a pair of unearned runs in his second. Khalid was the final player cut by the Saltdogs on Monday to reach the Opening Day roster limit, and his re-signing gives Lincoln six players classified as rookies on the roster.

Lincoln now has 24 players on its active roster, 12 pitchers and 12 position players. Under American Association rules, teams may carry 24 players for the first two weeks of the season, but must then reduce the roster to 22 players for the remainder of the year.

The 2009 Lincoln Saltdogs season begins on May 14 in Wichita, with the home opener scheduled for May 22 against Fort Worth. For more team and ticket information, go to www.saltdogs.com.
