St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (May 14, 2009) - In a wild ballgame that saw the St. Paul Saints come back from a five run deficit and take a lead into the ninth, it was an offensive showcase as the Saints lost 13-12 in 10 innings to the defending champion Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
With the Saints trailing 6-3 heading into the sixth Ole Sheldon led off with a walk and moved to second on a single to right-center by Craig Brazell. Brent Krause scored Sheldon with a single to right-center to make it 10-6. Two batters later Todd Self singled to right scoring Brazell.
In the seventh with the Saints trailing 10-5 Daron Roberts doubled and scored on a Ron Fenwick single to make it 10-6. A double by Sheldon moved Fenwick to third and Brazell's sacrifice fly scored Fenwick making it 10-7.
In the eighth the Saints took the lead since when Jacob Butler and Self led off with back-to-back walks. Tony Mansolino doubled home Butler to cut the deficit to two. Jeff DeSmidt then drove a ball to left that just went over the glove of the leaping left fielder Cory Harris for a homerun, giving the Saints an 11-10.
The Saints got an insurance run in the ninth when Brazell crushed a ball over the right field wall for a solo homer for a two run lead. He finished the night 3-4 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored.
Kerry Ligtenberg couldn't hold the lead, however, after pitching a perfect eighth inning of relief, he gave up two runs in the ninth with two outs. With two outs and the Canaries down to their final strike Patrick Reilly doubled to right scoring Ben Van Iderstine. Paul Smyth followed that with a double to right tying the score.
In the bottom of the 10th Joe Anthonson drew a one out walk against Saints reliever Mike Bille. With Anthonsen on first Bille threw a wild pitch that sent Anthonsen to second. After a strikeout against J.D. Reininger, Bille threw another wild pitch while attempting to intentionally walk Beau Torbert that sent Anthonsen to third. Cory Harris, who had homered twice in the evening, singled through on the right side to drive home the winning run.
Every Saints hitter collected a hit and Brazell and Krause each collected three hits. For the Canaries the first seven hitters in their order collected a hit with Beau Torbert going 4-5 and Harris going 3-6 with two homers, four RBI and two runs scored.
The same two teams meet Friday night at 7:05 p.m. with the Saints sending LHP Adam Cox (NR) to the mound against Canaries RHP Travis Kane (NR). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
