Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Dwayne White made sure the Shreveport-Bossier Captains had an Opening Day to remember, as the right fielder had four hits and all three RBIS, to lead the Captains to a 3-2, 10-innning win Thursday, ringing in the new team name with a bang.
Robert Romero then pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the tenth to earn the save by striking out the Pelicans' three-hole hitter, Rafael Alvarez, looking with the potential tying run at third base.
White had given the Captains (1-0) the lead in the first extra frame by driving in pinch runner Albert Gonzalez from third base with two outs. Gonzalez replaced Aaron Cone, who led off with a walk against Ulysses Roque (0-1). Jonathan Reynoso sacrificed Gonzalez to second, who then moved to third on a groundout by Richard Paz.
Romero walked Jimmy Mujica to start the bottom of the tenth, and the speedy shortstop then stole second. But Francisco Leandro grounded to third and could not advance Mujica, who made it to third on a groundout by Luis Guance before Alvarez was punched out to end the game.
The game, and season, started just about as well as they could have for the Captains. Reynoso led off with a bloop single to right off Dan Smith, who then hit Paz. White battled back from an 0-2 count and ripped a base hit to center to score Reynoso.
Pensacola (0-1) got the lead in the third, when Mojica tripled to right center to lead off the inning. After a foul out, Guance hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. A double by Alvarez and a single by Luis Batista then gave the Pelicans a 2-1 lead against starter Thad Markray.
But Markray buckled down after hat, allowing just two hits and a walk until he departed after the eighth inning. The veteran righty finished with four strikeouts and two walks in his eight innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. His teammates picked him up in the top of the eighth, pushing across a run against Roque. Reynoso led off with a walk, and then was sacrificed over by Paz. White followed with an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game.
Matt Petty (1-0) pitched around a one-out single to throw a scoreless ninth and earn the win for the Captains. Lefty Ronald Lowe (6-1, 3.90 ERA in 2008) will start for the Captains against righty Kyle Middleton (1-2, 5.49 for two teams) of the Pelicans.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their season-opening road trip in Pensacola on Friday, May 15 at 6:35 p.m., and will be on the road for the first series of their 2009 campaign.
