Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
West Valley City, UT - The Salmon Kings kicked off their second longest road trip of the year, a 14-day 7-game stint, in West Valley City, UT on Wednesday night versus the Utah Grizzlies. Todd Ford got the call in between the pipes for Victoria while Utah countered with Mike Mole.
The Grizzlies capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play when Vladimir Nikiforov picked up the puck and rushed down the right side into the Salmon Kings zone. The fleet-footed forward curled to go behind the net, but instead threw a saucer pass across the crease to teammate Tom May who tipped it up-and-in for a 1-0 Utah lead. Utah ended the period 1/5 on the power play while Victoria went 0/1 during the frame. The Grizzlies led 1-0 after the first period.
Victoria came out quickly to start the second. Chris St. Jacques notched his fifth power play goal of the year when he fired a shot past Mole to tie the game at 1-1. Jacob Dietrich gave the Kings the lead just over a minute later when he deflected a beautiful pass from Shaun Landolt into the yawning cage behind Mole. Utah would tie the game when Matt Craig stopped a Victoria clearing attempt, he found Nikiforov with a pass and he slipped it to a hard charging Tim Verbeek who tipped the puck past Ford. The Salmon Kings would regain the lead before the end of a frame when Tim Wedderburn fired a perfect deflection shot from the left point, and Shaun Landolt obliged by tipping it up-and-in for the 3-2 lead. That would be the score after 40 minutes of play.
Dylan Yeo extended the Kings lead when he blasted a shot from the point on the power play beating Mole. Victoria held off Utah down the stretch for the win. Salmon Kings 4 Grizzlies 2.
Victoria finished 2/3=66.6%% on the power play, while Utah finished 1/6=16.7%. Final shots were 32-22 for the Grizzlies.
The Salmon Kings and Grizzlies continue their three-game set on Friday and Saturday nights both games beginning at 6:05 PST. Victoria then travels to Ontario, California to take on the Reign. It will be the first time these two teams will meet. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. PST on Wednesday, December 3rd.
