Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings are proud of work they accomplished in the community for the month of November, and are excited to continue into the Holiday Season with many more events on the schedule.
Salmon Kings in the Community...
The Salmon Kings made their first visit of the 2005-06 season to the Victoria General Hospital Pediatric Ward on Thursday November 17, 2005. Forwards Adam Taylor and KC Timmons joined Defensemen Kurt Drummond, Nate Forster and Joel Andresen as they visited for close to two hours, signing autographs and having their pictures taken with the hospital's littlest patients.
The kids at the hospital can look forward to seeing Chad Dameworth, Derek Campbell, Adam Taylor, Simon Mangos, Pat Sutton and BJ Boxma the next time the Salmon Kings visit on Thursday December 15, 2005.
Salmon School
Members of the Salmon Kings made the first Elementary School visit to Brentwood on Monday December 5, 2005. Forwards Lanny Gare, Jade Galbraith, Dustan Heintz, Adam Taylor and Mike Wirll were joined by Goaltenders David Currie and Rob Muntain at the school, where they urged the kids to develop and practice their literacy skills. The players read to the students and then challenged them to a game of hockey in the gym after school.
The game was a close hard fought battle that the Brentwood Roadrunners won 5-4. It was a fantastic afternoon enjoyed by all including the hundreds of students who had an autograph opportunity with the Salmon Kings as well as a short lesson in the importance of literacy.
"The Salmon Kings will be expanding the school literacy program shortly and our visit to Brentwood School proved to be very successful," said Victoria Salmon Kings Community Relations Manager, Adam Olsen. "Our players continue to show they are excellent ambassadors in the community, and take that part of their job here in Victoria very seriously."
Holiday Cheer
The players of the Salmon Kings will be visiting Santa's Workshop next week to help wrap presents for C-FAX Santa's Anonymous, at which time the players will be adding a special gift from the hockey club to the presents they wrap. For all Salmon Kings home games in the month of December, fans are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to donate to Santa's Anonymous.
Everyone is encouraged to join the Salmon Kings and C-FAX in supporting the Santa's Anonymous program. Participating helps children in need and your participation adds to the well-being of the children in our community.
Salmon Kings coaches and management will be taking your phone calls during the Santa's Anonymous Miracle on Broughton Street Radio-a-Thon on Friday, December 16th beginning at 11:30am. Call in to C-FAX and make a pledge, and get a chance to talk to the coaches and win a chance for tickets to an upcoming Salmon Kings game in the New Year.
Community at the Rink...
Giving Back
Over the first nine games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre the Salmon Kings have partnered with many excellent charitable organizations to help raise much needed funds for various outstanding community outreach programs. Salmon Kings fans have helped to raise close to $17,000 so far this season supporting KidSport, the Canadian Cancer Society, Amateur Hockey, BC Children's Hospital and the Vancouver Island Head Injury Society. The Salmon Kings organization salute the many fans who have and continue to help support these worthwhile programs and charities.
The community groups benefiting from the 50/50 draws in the arena have also had the opportunity to set up kiosks to distribute information to fans in the arena. By participating in the 50/50 promotion, local organizations help to raise awareness of the many different charities and the valuable contribution they make to the Greater Victoria area.
The Salmon Kings were proud to host a stop on the Stanley Cup's Hurricane Relief Tour on December 2nd. Salmon Kings Captain Ryan Wade, Forward Steve Roberts and Goaltender Rob Muntain joined the Cup at the Victoria General Hospital Pediatric Ward and then fans had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the trophy for a donation to help with the re-building of the American Gulf States. The fans, staff and players of the Salmon Kings raised over $1500.00 for Hurricane Relief.
On Sunday December 4th the Salmon Kings first annual Teddy Bear Toss went off with success. Fans littered the ice with stuffed bears some of which have been donated to Santa's Anonymous, while others will be brought to the hospital next and donated to other organizations collecting toys for kids. After the game on Sunday fans had a chance to join KidSport's annual Post-Game Skate with the Salmon Kings, which players skated with the fans for about 45 minutes, signing autographs and having their photos taken with the players on the ice.
Feed the City
On Saturday December 17th the Salmon Kings and the Mustard Seed Food Bank are once again getting together to help raise money and non-perishable food for those in need this holiday season. The first food bank night held on Friday November 18th, helped to raise over $2000.00 worth of food, and the Salmon Kings challenge our fans to eclipse that mark on December 17th.
The coaches and players of the Victoria Salmon Kings work very hard to put an entertaining product on the ice, and work just as hard in the community to make a difference where they can. The Salmon Kings will continue to expand their involvement in the New Year working with literacy, amateur hockey and as many other events as possible.
