Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, IN - Richard Salazar quieted the RailCats offense as Sioux City avoided a sweep with a 5-0 victory over the RailCats on Thursday night. The loss dropped Gary SouthShore to 38-27 on the season, while Sioux City improved to 25-40.

Sioux City broke a six-game losing streak with the victory and the RailCats saw a four-game win streak come to a close with the 5-0 decision.

The Explorers scored first for the third time during the four-game series. Luke Murton hammered a two-run homerun to left field to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

One time teammates with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in 2010 and '11; Richard Salazar and Osvaldo Rodriguez both pitched quality baseball early with Rodriguez's home run the only blemish through the first five.

Salazar retired 12 in a row before a two-out walk to Mike Massaro in the sixth inning. After an error by Anthony Kaskkaden, Salazar made a leaping grab on a liner back to the middle by Ryan Babineau to rob the RailCats of any offense in the inning.

Sioux City added to their lead in the seventh and chased Rodriguez from the ball game. Austin Gallagher led off with a single and Rodriguez was lifted for Taylor Sewitt. Luke Murton doubled to put runners at second and third and Yusuke Inoguchi followed with a single down the right field line to make it 4-0.

Later in the inning, Leugim Barroso scored Inoguchi from third with a ground out to second to extend the advantage to 5-0.

Rodriguez took his first loss as a RailCat allowing three runs on six hits in six plus innings. Osvaldo did not walk a batter and struck out three. He threw just 67 pitches on Thursday night.

Richard Salazar has won both of his starts of the season against the RailCats. In 15 innings he has allowed just one run on seven hits and one walk.

Austin Gallagher went 8-for-14 in the series and is hitting over .500 since joining the Explorers. The RailCats three hits in the game was their lowest output in a game this season; they were shutout for the first time in 2013.

The RailCats begin a six-game road trip on Friday night to St. Paul and Sioux City. LHP James Adkins (0-2, 4.95 ERA) will start for the RailCats, the Saints will send RHP Drew Gay (1-1, 4.11 ERA). The radio broadcast will begin at 7:00 p.m. on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and Railcatsbaseball.com.
