St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 30, 2009) - The St. Paul Saints needed a wild one to end their five game losing streak and the Lincoln Saltdogs seven game winning streak as they scored on a wild pitch in the 12th for an 8-7 victory on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 4,802.
In the 12th Jake Butler singled to right field with one out and moved to third on a double by Brent Krause. After Jeff Eure was intentionally walked to load the bases, Andrew Schmiesing took a 2-2 pitch in the dirt that got away from catcher Shawn McGill. Butler raced home from third and McGill's throw to the plate was wide and Butler scored the game winner.
The two teams got to that point during a wild final few innings of the game. With the Saints trailing 3-2 in the seventh the Saltdogs put up three runs in the top half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead. With two outs McGill singled to left and moved to third on a double by Steve Alexander. Shea McFeely then hit a grounder to second baseman Tony Mansolino, but his throw to first went awry allowing both runners to score. Brandon Jones followed with an RBI single.
The Saints answered in the bottom of the inning as Schmiesing led off with a double and scored on a double by Steve Butler cutting the deficit to 6-3. The next hitter, Anthony Norman, singled home Butler to make it 6-4.
In the eighth the Saints took the lead. Jason Cooper led off with a solo homer to right, his first of the season, and 100th of his career that cut the deficit to 6-5. With two outs Jeff Eure hit a liner to left that was just out of the reach of left fielder Pichi Balet and went for a double. Schmiesing followed with an infield single which brought up Scott Knazek. He drove a ball to left-center that Josh Burrus looked like he was going to catch, but it hit off his glove and both runners scored on the two base error giving the Saints a 7-6 lead.
The Saints couldn't hold the lead, however, because in the ninth Alexander reached on a two out single to center. Shea McFeely then hit a high pop-up to medium left field, but with the outfield playing deep to guard against the extra base hit, both left fielder Jake Butler and shortstop Steve Butler couldn't get to the ball and Alexander scored all the way from first to tie the game.
The same two teams meet Wednesday night at Midway Stadium for game three of the four game series. The Saints send RHP Reed Dickert (1-2, 4.50) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Brian Campbell (2-1, 5.03). The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard live on Relevant Radio 1330. It is Viva Los Santos Night.
