
Saints Shake Up Roster With Signing of Three Players

ST. PAUL, MN (June 30, 2009) - With the second half beginning in less than a week the St. Paul Saints made some changes over the last few days signing outfielders Anthony Norman and Jason Cooper and infielder Alex Fonseca.
The 24-year-old Norman was playing for the Angels organization and was at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga this season where he hit .238 with two homers and 12 RBI in 27 games. The Angles signed him in 2007 out of UCLA and he hit .290 with 15 homers and 77 RBI in 163 over his first two minor league seasons. In 551 at bats he had 20 doubles, 19 triples, scored 117 runs and was 48 for 55 in stolen bases. He had a .477 slugging percentage and a .399 on base percentage. He joined the Saints June 26 in Wichita and is 3-13.
The 28-year-old Cooper was playing in the Cleveland Indians organization at Triple-A Buffalo this season. In 26 games he hit .169 with four RBI. Cooper was a third round selection by the Indians in the 2001 June Amateur Draft. He played his first game at Triple-A in 2004 and played half the season in Buffalo in 2005. He spent all of 2006-08 there as well. Last season he hit .247 with nine homers and 45 RBI in 102 games. In 304 at bats he scored 38 runs, had 19 doubles, four triples, slugged .424 and had an on base percentage of .356. Cooper went 0-3 with a walk in his Saints debut on Monday.
The 25-year-old Fonseca rejoins the Saints, after playing for them during part of the 2007 season. He hit .221 with four homers and 28 RBI in 50 games that year. Last season he played for the Evansville Otters (Independent, Northern League) and hit .247 with three homers and 19 RBI in 51 games. In 170 at bats he scored 27 runs, with 12 doubles, slugged .371 and had an on base percentage of .365.
To make room for the three players infielder Todd Self retired. Self was hitting .319 with four homers and 27 RBI. The Saints released catcher Chris Herbert, who was 9-30 with a homer and four RBI and infielder Stephen Derrick, who was 1-12 with an RBI.
The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 players, 12 position players and 10 pitchers.
