Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Pensacola, FL - The Sioux Falls Canaries (19-24) scored five first inning runs to defeat the Pensacola Pelicans (20-23) on Tuesday night at Jim Spooner Field. Noel Baca threw six strong innings, allowing just two runs, in leading the Canaries past the team that cut him at the end of pre-season camp.

The Canaries scored all they needed and then some in a big first inning. Jared Lemieux opened the game with a double, and Tim Hutting followed with a single. With runners on the corners, Joe Anthonsen tripled to give the Canaries a 2-0 lead. Cory Harris followed with a single to score Anthonsen. As Harris reached base for the 36th consecutive game, the Canaries went ahead by three. Patrick Reilly walked and J.D. Reininger singled to load the bases for Kyle Eveland. In his first professional at-bat, Eveland singled to left field to score Harris and give the Canaries a 4-0 advantage. Reilly scored the inning's final run when Ken Lup grounded into a fielder's choice, and after a half-inning the Canaries led 5-0.

Pensacola scored twice in the fourth inning. Dallas Christison reached base on an infield single, and then scored on a double by Adam Deleo. Deleo advanced around to score on a pair of groundouts, and after four innings the Pelicans were within three, 5-2.

The Canaries added two runs in the top of the fourth inning. With two on and two out, Cory Harris hit a groundball to Pelicans third baseman Luis Bautista. Bautista threw the ball away at first base and two runs scored as the Canaries went ahead by the 7-2 final.

The victory was the Birds second road win in a row, and their fourth win in the last five games.

Baca (2-1) gave up two runs on three hits in six innings while walking one and striking out two. Randy Beam (3-5) gave up seven runs, five earned on 10 hits in suffering the loss for the Pelicans.

The Canaries and Pelicans continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at Jim Spooner Field at 6:35 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Fort Worth Cats on July 7. The game, which will mark the beginning of the second half, will feature a "Fly Away Giveaway" presented by Allegiant Air.
