Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - With the Famous Chicken on hand, the big crowd of 3,371 enjoyed a night of hilarity at Fair Grounds Field. They even saw a record, as rightfielder Dwayne White had 10 putouts, setting an American Association record for one game. The only thing missing for the fans was a win for the home team, as the Shreveport-Bossier Captains fell behind 6-0 early and never could quite get back to striking distance, as the Fort Worth Cats evened their four-game series at one with a 10-5 win Tuesday night.
Thad Markray (3-6) got roughed up early, leaving after four with his shortest outing of the year. The Cats (30-13) had a single from Cameron Blair and a walk to Ryan Patterson with one out in the first, before John Allen started his huge night with an RBI double to right. Patrick O'Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Fort Worth added to the advantage in the third, as Allen hit a two-run single and Michael Bell hit a sac fly to make it 5-0. Markray gave up one more in the fourth before departing, allowing nine hits and six runs in total, with two walks and two strikeouts.
B.J. Litchfield tossed up a scoreless fifth, and the Captains (18-25) drew closer against Joel Kirsten (5-2) in the bottom half. Newcomer Tommy Bryant walked and Jonathan Reynoso hit a one-out double. Dwayne White then drove in Bryant with a groundout, before Christopher Garcia came through with an RBI single to make it 6-2. But the next batter, Andres Rodriguez, was out at second base over-sliding the bag after his base hit to end the inning.
Then the Cats re-extended the margin, as Chuck Carter rolled a slow ground ball through the right side to stat the inning. After a flyout (to right, of course), Blair singled and Patterson walked to load the bases. Allen then hit a grounder just inside the third-base bag for a bases-clearing three-run double, giving him six RBIs on his 4-for-5 night. A single and a wild pitch then made it 10-2.
Shreveport-Bossier did battle back, knocking Kirsten out with two runs in the sixth. However, Fort Worth's bullpen only allowed a run on one hit and two walks and two hit batters, and the lefty starter avenged his loss to the Captains last week with the win. Kirsten went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and four runs, with three walks and two strikeouts.
Notes: The previous record for outfield putouts was eight, set by Rolando Avila of Pensacola on June 19, 2006...O'Sullivan extended his American Association-record hitting streak to 26 with a single in the third. He was 3-for-3 on the night...The Cats' 2-through-5 hitters, Blair, Patterson, Allen and O'Sullivan, combined to go 11-for-16, with eight RBIs and seven runs scored...Robert Romero, Jakob Cunningham and Justin Dowdy each pitched scoreless innings in relief...Garcia extended his on-base streak to 22 straight games...Bryant was signed today to replace Luany Sanchez, who was traded to Laredo of the United League...White now has a nine-game hitting streak, with four multi-hit games in the first five games of this homestand...Brian Fryer hit four fly balls to White, and only Patterson, Kelley Gulledge, and Carter did not hit balls to White...The Captains have ended innings on non-force plays on the basepaths in six of the last seven games.
