Saints Trounced by Goldeyes 14-7

WINNIPEG, MB - The St. Paul Saints came in with the second worst ERA in the American Association. On Friday night they didn't do anything to help that number out as they gave up at least one run in each of the first seven innings and lost 14-7 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park.

Every starter for the Goldeyes collected a hit, with eight of the nine starters collecting an RBI and nine of 10 players scoring at least one run. The Saints used four pitchers and all gave up at least one run. It wasn't until the eighth inning, when Hugh Adams retired the side in order, that the Goldeyes failed to score in an inning, but at that point the game was firmly in hand.

The game was actually close through six innings, but the Goldeyes exploded for six runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first on a Brandon Tripp RBI single and a three-run homer for Ole Sheldon, his second of the season.

The Saints started Aaron Correa, who was just released by the Goldeyes and was hoping to prove something to his former team. With the Saints leading 4-1 in the second the Goldeyes tied it on three consecutive RBI singles by Mike Coles, Amos Ramon and Ray Sadler.

The Goldeyes took the lead for good in the third when Josh Mazzola blasted a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season, to make it 5-4. Correa lasted just 2.1 innings allowing five runs on nine hits.

Dustin Klabunde took over for Correa and gave up a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Mazzola and a run in the fifth on a balk. In that fifth inning with runners at first and second and nobody out Coles hit a pop up in the infield that shortstop Adam Frost let drop, grabbed the ball on the short hop, touched second for the force out and threw to first with Coles being ruled safe. Saints manager George Tsmais came out of the dugout to argue and was tossed. Klabunde went 2.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits.

Billy Soule suffered the toughest fate of the night allowing six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Adams allowed a run in 1.1 innings.

Adam Frost extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 3-5 night with a double, homer, RBI and two runs scored while Joey Becker extended his hitting streak to eight games going 2-4.

The Saints return home Saturday night for a four game series against the Kansas City T-Bones at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (2-2, 4.94) to the mound against T-Bones RHP Lucas Irvine (2-3, 2.85). It is an Independence Day Celebration with Post Game Fireworks Super Show presented by Cub Foods and Snapple. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
