Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Sox score eleven runs in the second straight game with an 11-2 win over the Bears at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. A crowd of 2,060 saw Amarillo defeat the Bears to split the four-game series. The game lasted two hours and thirty-seven minutes as Ryan Mitchell earned his sixth win in his last seven games pitched. The Sox have not dropped a series in their last ten, dating back to the beginning of June.
Newark scored early but not often in the series finale. Stephen Malcolm walked as the second batter of the game and would score on a Carlos Guzman double down the first base line. Amarillo made it 4-1 after the bottom of the second when Brandon Jones, Adam DeLaGarza, and Chris Valencia all drove in runs on singles. Both DeLaGarza and Jason Martin scored on the hit by Valencia, who was caught stealing to end the inning.
Ryan Mitchell retired nine straight batters from the last out of the second until two outs in the fifth. In the bottom half of the fifth, Valencia singled and then scored on a Joe Weik triple to left center. The next batter, Cory Patton picked up an RBI on a groundout to the shortstop. The score was 6-1, Amarillo. Another run scored in the sixth when KC Serna singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Two batters later, DeLaGarza picked up his second run batted in of the game with a single up the middle. Starter Leonard Giammanco would leave with game with one out in the sixth. Ryan Carr was the replacement.
Newark came within five runs of the Sox by scoring one in the seventh on a run batted in by Jereme Milons. But Amarillo scored four runs to widen the gap after the seventh inning stretch. Cory Patton led off with a double, Trey Ford was hit by a pitch, and then Patton scored when Serna reached on a throwing error by Bears' second baseman, Stephen Malcolm. Chris Grossman cleared the bases on a three-run homer to left, knocking reliever, Carr out of the game. Ryan Fennell came in and struck out the next two batters, getting out of the seventh and then put down the Sox in order during the eighth and finishing with three strikeouts.
Josh Giles pitched the eighth for the Sox, allowing no runs and no hits with a strikeout. Erik Draxton closed out the ninth with two strikeouts, while the leadoff batter reached on an error. Bears' reliever Ryan Carr pitched an inning total while giving up four runs, three earned on two hits with one walk. Leonard Giammanco (L, 1-4) allowed seven runs on twelve hits with a walk in five and a third innings pitched. Ryan Mitchell (W, 6-2) gave up two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three. The Sox out-hit Newark fourteen to six in their nine-run victory.
With the win, the Sox improve to 29-17, while the Bears fall to 14-28 on the season. Saturday, the Sox travel to Wichita for a four-game series against the Wingnuts.
