Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Sixty minutes of dominant hockey led the Dubuque Fighting Saints to a resounding 5-1 victory over the Team USA NTDP U18s on Saturday night. Two goals in the first period, and three goals in the second period set the tone in the win.
Jaxon Castor got the start in Saturday's game, and was a brick wall all night, stopping 28 of 29 shots fired his way. It was his first win since early October, his first USHL start against the Green Bay Gamblers. His best work came on NHL Draft-hopeful Kieffer Bellows, robbing him point-blank on an opportunity late in the third period.
The offensive explosion in the second period began with a turnover forced in the offensive zone. Trey Dodd picked off an outlet pass and found Shane Kavanagh all alone in the slot. That goal extended his point streak to six games.
Casey Johnson and Patrick Holway also scored goals in the second period, both off of clean faceoff wins. Holway's marker was his first goal in the USHL.
Dubuque got on the scoreboard twice in the first period, starting with a goal by Mitchell Smith. He redirected a shot-pass by Gordie Green in the high slot. That put the Saints up 1-0. It was the game-winning goal, but there was more to be had for the Fighting Saints' offense.
Newcomer Zach Solow powered home his first USHL goal, knocking home a pass from Joey Keane on the power play. He would later collect an assist in the game for his first multi-point effort.
Team USA could only muster a third-period goal from Joey Anderson, off of a missed shot by Bellows in the high slot. Anderson batted the puck out of mid-air to poke home the only tally.
Continually frustrated, the U18s took a bevy of penalties throughout, leading to continuous power play opportunities for the Fighting Saints. Solow and Holway connected for the man-advantage unit, who went 2-for-6 on the night.
The Fighting Saints will have the week off, and then take on the Youngstown Phantoms for a special 5:05 p.m. start at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Sunday, December 27. It will be the 25th Anniversary celebration of the movie Home Alone. Wear an ugly sweater to the game, and take part in a postgame skate with the Saints. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 563.583.6880, or by going online to DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
