SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 17, 2010) - The margin for error for the St. Paul Saints playoff hopes is miniscule with two weeks left in the season and the margin for error on Tuesday night against the Sioux Falls Pheasants was even smaller as a three-run homer by American Association record holder Brandon Sing was enough to do in the Saints 4-1.

The Saints needed a strong pitching performance from their starter and Zach Peterson provided that, but it was the pitch to Sing in the fourth that he wish he had back. Tim Hutting led off the inning with a single to center. With one out Beau Torbert hit a slow grounder to third that Brent Krause fielded, but rushed his throw to first and threw it away. Torbert was given a single and Hutting went to third on the error. The next batter, Sing, who has already broken his own American Association record for homers in a season, hit a three-run homer to left his 27th of the season giving the Pheasants a 3-0 lead.

The Saints couldn't do much against Pheasants starter Chris Salberg until the sixth when Jason Cooper singled to left and scored on a double by Josh Burrus to make it 3-1.

The Pheasants didn't waste any time getting the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Reggie Abercrombie doubled and scored on a single by Torbert. Peterson went the distance for the Saints going 8.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out eight, but received the complete game loss, his second of the season.

The Saints made a little noise in the ninth against Pheasants closer Aaron Cotter. Brandon Carter reached on a one out single and Steve Butler followed with a single to center. Butler went 2-3 extending his hitting streak to 10. Josh Alley, however, grounded into a game ending double play.

The two teams play game two of the three game series on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send LHP Ryan Morse (5-3, 4.71). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
