El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso won their second straight game in the ninth inning as they dropped the Grand Prairie AirHogs 9-4 on Tuesday night at QuickTrip Park. El Paso broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning when the AirHogs committed two errors and walked three batters. It brings to an end the Diablos six game losing streak against Grand Prairie.
The night did not begin well for El Paso as three runs came in for the AirHogs in the first inning on two hits, three walks and two errors. El Paso rallied to tie the game in the third inning. Rico Santana got the Diablos on the board with a RBI single which was followed by the next batter, Arnoldo Ponce, hitting a two run home run to tie the game. Greg Porter led off the next inning with a home run to immediately give the AirHogs the lead back. The game was tied in the seventh on a strange wild pitch on which the Grand Prairie catcher, Danny Jordan, was injured and it allowed Byron Smith to score from second base.
The score would still be tied in the eighth inning when the AirHogs got a two out hit from Robert Perry, but the possible go ahead run was thrown out at the plate by Jeff Vincent to end the inning. The next inning El Paso made their move. The bases were loaded with one out and after a strike out to Kyle Nichols, Bryon Smith would walk on four pitches to bring in the go ahead run. Back to back errors on the next two batters would allow two more runs to score before Jonathan Reynoso delivered the final blow, a two RBI single to push the lead to 9-4.
Both teams collected nine hits in the game. Reynoso, Jeff Vincent, Rico Santana and Adam Deleo all had two hits in the game. Bryon Smith didn't get a hit, but he did collect three walks and brought in the game's winning run on his bases loaded walk. El Paso also worked eight walks in the game.
Shaun Ellis started and battled two outs into the seventh inning. His night started rough with him walking five through the first two innings but he settled down to have a solid start the rest of the way. He ended up walking just two the rest of the way. Ellis ended up throwing 145 pitches in the game but earned a no decision after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five. David Whigam (2-6) got the final out in the eighth inning and that was enough to earn him the victory.
El Paso can go for the series win on Wednesday night when they send William Buzhardt (2-3, 7.33) to the mound against Chris Martin (3-0, 2.42). Game time is set for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning to ESPN radio 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
