Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - Osvaldo Rodriguez and a balanced offense were just the medicine the doctor ordered for the Shreveport-Bossier Captains, who broke out of a four-game losing streak with a 8-3 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs at Haymarket Park on Tuesday night.
Just as they had done in every game of their losing streak, the Captains (48-37, 19-19 2nd half) fell behind early, as the Saltdogs (45-40, 17-21) used a walk and two hits to take a 1-0 lead. But Rodriguez (11-3) shut them down after that, and after a 1-2-3 first inning, the Captains offense awoke.
Palmer Karr walked with one out in the second inning, before Andres Rodriguez grounded an RBI double down the leftfield line. After Uriak Marquez (who turned 27 on Tuesday) grounded out in his return to the Captains' lineup, Peterson flared an RBI single to the left of the diving second baseman Brandon Jones to give Shreveport-Bossier its first lead since last Wednesday against Sioux Falls.
That lead got bigger the next inning, as Mike Provencher started a rally with a one-out triple to right-center. After Chris Cullen (4-5) pitched around Christopher Garcia, Jorge Alvarez and Karr hit consecutive pitches for RBI singles through the left side to make it 4-1. Rodriguez then struck out, but Marquez laced a double down the rightfield line to give the Captains a 6-1 cushion.
The score stayed that way until the sixth, when Peterson led off the inning with his second homer in as many nights, and Provencher knocked in Sabatella with a base hit to cap the scoring for Shreveport-Bossier.
Osvaldo Rodriguez went six innings to get his league-leading 11th win of the season, allowing four hits and the one run, with four walks and five strikeouts.
After Lincoln got two runs in the seventh off Mark Haynes, Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco each struck out one in perfect innings to close things out, clinching the franchise's first winning season since 2006.
Notes: The Captains were 48-48 last year, and this season will only have at most 95 games after a rainout on June 29 against Grand Prairie.Garcia walked three more times and has broken the American Association record for walks in a season with his 76th of the year, against Chris Thompson in the ninth inning.Eight of the nine Captains had at least one hit.Five of the Captains' 10 hits were for extra bases. The five hits allowed by Shreveport-Bossier were the fewest since a seven-inning win in the second game of a doubleheader at Fort Worth on July 31, when Richard Salazar allowed four. The last time the Captains allowed four hits in a nine-inning game was Rodriguez's last win, a four-hit combined effort with Maj and Carrasco against Grand Prairie on July 23.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains conclude their three-game road series with the Lincoln Saltdogs, on Wednesday, August 18, at 7:05 p.m. The Captains return home to finish their regular season Fair Grounds Field schedule with a three-game series against the Pensacola Pelicans, starting on Friday, August 20, at 7:05 p.m. That night is GAP Broadcasting "Practice Safe Text" Night, as well as Willis-Knighton Mouth Cancer Awareness Night and BPCC Night at the ballpark. All games are broadcast streaming live on ustream.tv.
