Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts swept a double header from the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night, winning 7-0 and 2-0.
Jae Jung pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout in the opener. Jung walked one, struck out one, and did not allow a runner past first base at any point in the game. Sioux City also failed to have multiple runners on in any inning. Jung had not pitched since July 23rd when he was a member of the X's. The shutout was the fourth in the last two seasons for Jung who threw just 74 pitches in the win.
The Wingnuts gave Jung plenty of support with a five-run fifth against starter Ty Marotz. Jeff Christy drew a bases loaded walk with one out that gave the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead. Josh Horn followed with a two-run single through the left side. Ryan Patterson broke the game open with a long, two-run double to right-center.
Carlos Rivera led off the third with a double to left-center, his second double of the night. Two batters later, Jorge Delgado singled hard up the middle to score Rivera and give the Wingnuts a 6-0 lead. Jorge Cortes delivered a two-out, RBI single to right in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0. Marotz took the loss, allowing all seven runs in six innings of work.
Kevin Angelle pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in the nightcap, helping the Wingnuts earn the double header sweep. Angelle pitched out of several jams as the Explorers stranded seven runners in their first six innings.
Angelle left runners on first and third in the opening inning when he retired Kent Sakamoto on a flyball to right. Angelle worked around a leadoff walk in the second, striking out Tim Alberts and Matt Kramer back-to-back and then getting Javier Brown on another fly to right. The Wingnuts left-hander was most clutch in the top of the third when Sioux City put runners on the corners with one out for cleanup hitter Jacob Cruz. Angelle worked ahead in the count 0-2 before getting Cruz to hit into an inning-ending double play to keep the game scoreless.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the bottom of the third. Ryan Patterson hit a groundball to second that Derek Schermerhorn threw wildly into the Explorers' dugout, allowing Patterson reach second base. Cesar Suarez hit a comebacker to X's starter John Leonard who caught Patterson between second and third. Patterson however, was able to slide under a tag from Kent Sakamoto during the rundown and scrambled to third while Suarez took second. After Cortes flied out to left, the X's intentionally walked Rivera to load the bases. Raul Gonzalez connected on a flyball to right field that scored Patterson and gave the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead. Delgado extended his hitting streak to 15 games in a row with a line drive single to left.
In the top of the fifth, Jones walked with one out and stole second base. Schermerhorn drove a ball to right that went off the glove of Cortes. Jones, who initially stopped in case the ball was caught, came hard around third. Cortes fired to Suarez, who nailed Jones at the plate with a perfect relay throw that kept Sioux City off the board. With Schermerhorn on third, Angelle struck out T.J. Bohn to end the inning.
Angelle struck out five in the win while walking five and allowing only three hits. Angelle was lifted in the top of the sixth after issuing a one-out walk to Sakamoto. Luke Massetti came in from the bullpen and struck out Ray Serrano. When the Explorers pinch-hit with left-hand batting Steve Pearson, Kevin Hooper brought in reliever Dustin Pease who got Pearson to ground out to second to end the inning.
Cephas Howard closed out the double header with a perfect top of the seventh to earn his fourth save of the season. With the two wins, the Wingnuts took sole possession of first place by a half game over Sioux Falls. Wichita is also just one and a half games back of Lincoln for the second-best overall record in the North.
The series continues Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Adam Cowart takes on right-hander Mikael Ryder. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS.
