Saints Sign Seasoned Starter Scarpetta

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints now have a full complement of arms in their starting rotation and it may be as deep as their 2015 staff. The Saints signed right-hander Cody Scarpetta and he will start on Saturday night against the Kansas City T-Bones.

The 27-year-old Scarpetta pitched last season for the Bridgeport Blue Fish and York Revolution in the Atlantic League and went 3-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 16 games (13 starts). In 65.2 innings pitched he walked 42 and struck out 61 and opponents hit .228 against him. His best outing was a 5.0 inning no-hit performance on July 23 at Sugar Land.

Scarpetta was an 11th round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007 out of Guilfford (IL) High School. He dominated at his first stop in the Arizona League going 1-0 with a 0.57 ERA in six games (five starts). He was promoted to the Pioneer League where he finished the season going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in six games (three starts).

In 2009 he spent most of the season with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Single-A, Midwest League) and bounced around from starting to relief. He struck out six or more eight times including 10 in 6.0 innings on April 22 vs. Peoria. He was promoted at the end of the season and pitched one game at Double-A Huntsville.

Scarpetta had an incredible stretch in 2010 at High-A Brevard County where he struck out six or more in eight consecutive starts including eight or more four times. He struck out a career high 11 on July 8 when he hurled 7.0 shutout innings on three hits against the Dunedin Blue Jays. He finished fifth in the Florida State League in games started (27), strikeouts (142) & highest strikeout /9 IP ratio (142/128.0/9.98). He was named the fourth best prospect in the Brewers organization following the season by Baseball America.

His season was cut short in August of 2011 when he injured his elbow that caused him to miss the entire 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery, but not before Scarpetta finished 1st at Double-A in the Southern League in lowest batting average against (.234) and seventh in ERA (3.85). He was called up to the Major Leagues for one day, on July 10

Scarpetta was released by the Brewers organization following the 2013 season and signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League. After eight starts he was purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization and pitched at Single-A Lynchburg. He was part of an incredible feet with the Hillcats when his team threw back-to-back no-hitters against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. On June 27 Scarpetta tossed 7.0 no-hit innings and Benny Pruneda tossed the final 2.0. The Hillcats had tossed a combined no-hitter the night before with Lucas Sims and Alex Wilson.

To make room for Scarpetta the Saints placed shortstop Mike Gilmartin on the disabled list.

The Saints currently have 22 players on the roster, one less than the league maximum of 22, 11 pitchers and 11 position players.
