
Canaries Drop Third Straight in 9-6 Loss

Sioux City, IA- The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-3) opened up a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers (3-6) on Friday night, losing to their I-29 rivals by the final score of 9-6 at Mercy Field at Lewis & Clark Park.
The Birds' jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after infielder Blake Schmit roped a triple to the gap in right-center before scoring seven pitches later on a wild pitch.
The Explorers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, before taking their first lead of the night in the bottom of the third on two-out, solo homerun from Noah Perio Jr., his third blast of the season.
The Canaries answered back with a leadoff double from shortstop Jerome Pena, who later scored on a Cameron Monger sacrifice fly to right to make it a 2-2 ball game.
The X's took the lead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning, scoring six runs on three hits while sending 10 men to the plate. Perio capped off the big inning with a bases clearing single that brought in three runs for Sioux City. The Explorers second baseman finished the night going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Pena paced the Canaries offense, finishing the night going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Schmit continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Designated hitter David Bergin also had a two-hit night in the loss.
Canaries starting pitcher Madison Boer (0-1, 12.46 ERA) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up eight runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked a season high four batters, walk two in the loss.
The Canaries will look to snap their three-game losing streak on Saturday night when LHP Joe Bircher (0-0, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound against Explorers RHP Graham Johnson (0-0, 3.60 ERA). Fans can listen to the action live on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
