Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, N.D. - One night after stranding a season-high 14 runners, the Wichita Wingnuts left 11 more on base, as they fell to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-3 Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
With Wichita (2-7) leading 3-2, the RedHawks (5-4) took advantage of some defensive miscues to mount a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Fargo-Moorhead loaded the bases with one out, and Keury De La Cruz hit into a fielder's choice that allowed two runs score after an error was made on the play. Brian Humphries then chased Wingnuts starter Charlie Leesman (0-1) with a two-run double that capped the four-run frame.
The home team then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth against the Wichita bullpen with Ryan Bailey collecting an RBI single.
Over the final four innings, the Wingnuts could not get much going, getting two runners into scoring position and nobody past second as the RedHawks bullpen worked 4.1 scoreless frames.
For the second straight night Fargo struck first, three batters into the game. De La Cruz brought in a run with a ground out, and has driven in 10 in the two games of the series after collecting two Saturday night.
Wichita answered in the next half inning. Dustin Geiger started the frame with a double and was brought in when Harrison Kain singled with two outs to tie it up.
The visitors took their first lead of the series in the fourth. T.J. Mittelstaedt started the inning with his second homer, a solo shot that made it 2-1.
After the RedHawks evened the score in their half, Wichita regained the lead in the fifth. The Wingnuts loaded the bases with one out, and after a strikeout, Richard Prigatano drew a walk to collect his team-leading seventh RBI and put Wichita in front. However, that was all the Wingnuts got in the inning as Jose Almarante (1-0) came on to get the final out and leave the bases loaded.
The Wingnuts and RedHawks conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. Wichita will send righty Jon Link (0-2, 11.73) to the mound, while Fargo will counter with southpaw Tyler Alexander (1-0, 2.77). First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
