Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IOWA - Down by one goal in the third period, momentum changed quite suddenly. Scrappy play, including some fisticuffs, propelled a Dubuque Fighting Saints rally, scoring three goals in the third period to upend the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-2 on Saturday night.
Will D'Orsi responded to a Cameron Orchard power play goal in the third period to tie it up. The Massachusetts native slipped past a Black Hawk defender, stashing a puck through the five hole. Then, on a gorgeous cross-ice dish by Jakob Romo, Petter Makitalo scored his second goal in as many games, ripping a one-time blast at the top of the left circle past Dayton Rasmussen to take the lead.
Charlie Combs capped the rally with a late goal, as he collected a turnover in the deep slot, stashing a snap shot into the top shelf, extending the lead to two.
Both Gavin Nieto and Jaxon Castor saw time between the pipes in this contest. Nieto was welcomed to the game by immediately facing a 5-on-3 power play opportunity, of which he assisted in killing off. The penalty killers, who were perfect a night ago, allowed only one goal on the power play on Saturday.
Castor held the fort in the first period, stopping every shot he saw. He eventually made 10 saves on 11 shots. Nieto stopped 15 of 16 Waterloo offerings.
For the second straight night, it was the Fighting Saints who dented the twine to begin, but this time in the first period. Darien Craighead corralled a loose puck in the slot on a three-on-two rush started by Mitchell and Evan Smith, depositing the puck past a fallen Rasmussen to take a 1-0 lead late in the first.
Waterloo responded to Dubuque's first-period lead by beginning the second period with a vengeance. Forward Garrett Wait jumped on a Fighting Saints turnover, shoveling a puck towards Castor. David Cotton deflected the shot past Castor to tie the game mere moments into the second period.
As a result of the victory, the Fighting Saints swept the preseason back-to-back with the Black Hawks, who dropped three of their four preseason games over the past six days.
Up next for the Fighting Saints is a trip to Waterloo to compete in the Iowa Classic. The first matchup will be against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday, September 18 starting at 7:05 p.m. from Young Arena. Catch all of the action on Super Hits 106.1 FM starting at 6:45 p.m.
