Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Dubuque Fighting Saints' big finish tilted Saturday's exhibition matchup at Mystique Ice Center toward the home team and away from the Waterloo Black Hawks in a 4-2 decision.
A controversial goal represented the only scoring during the first period. Waterloo netminder Dayton Rasmussen was knocked backwards into the cage, and while he was trying to regain his footing, Darien Craighead lifted a shot into the goal from the left circle at 14:32.
During a penalty-filled second period, the Hawks copped the lone goal at 57 seconds. Garrett Wait swiped the puck inside the blue line; his long shot was redirected near the top of the crease by David Cotton. During the frame, the Hawks had four power plays while the Saints had three, but all for naught.
The Hawks broke through on special teams 52 seconds into the third when Cameron Orchard flipped a backhander past the stick side of Gavin Nieto.
However, Dubuque's third period flurry turned the tide beginning at 10:27, when Jakob Romo's pass from circle to circle set up a one-timer by Petter Makitalo. The Saints took the lead two minutes later when Will D'Orsi sped into the offensive zone and cut to the net from the left wing boards to stuff in a chance. With five minutes to play, Charlie Combs added an insurance goal, firing a shot to the top short side corner.
The Black Hawks are now off until Thursday evening when they take on the Des Moines Buccaneers during the first game of the 2015 Iowa Classic at Young Arena. Daily passes for the three-day event involving all five of the state's USHL teams are available for $7, while All Session passes may be purchased for $15.
