Sioux City Musketeers News Release
The Musketeers opened up their pre-season schedule with a 5-1 win against the defending Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede at Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa tonight.
Christian Meike (Filips Buncis, Brian Rigali) opened scoring at 8:52 into the first period with a wrist shot that beat Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka from the left point, going stick side high for the opening tally.
Finnish forward Eeli Tolvanen (unassisted) scored the first of two goals on the evening at the 16:57 mark of the second period. Evan Wisocky (Logan Gestro, Mitchell Fossier), made it 3-0 just 8 seconds later with his 1st of the preseason at 17:05.
Sioux Falls' Shane Kuzmeski (Daniel Warpecha) finally solved the Musketeers starting goaltender, Cam Gornet, on the power play at the 7:52 mark of the third period, but it would be all Sioux City after that when Tolvanen (Fossier) put his second of the night to bed at 9:31 while the Musketeers were short-handed. Matt Steeves capped all scoring with a penalty shot tally at 14:36 of the third after getting hauled down on a breakaway at 14:36 of the third.
Sioux Falls went 1 for 5 on the power play, Sioux City went 0-4 with a man advantage. Sioux City outshot the Stampede 37-26 on the evening.
Cam Gornet stopped 25 of 26 Sioux Falls shots in net for the Musketeers. Stezka allowed 5 goals on 37 Sioux City attempts.
The Musketeers (1-0-0) return to action on Saturday night, September 12th when they host the Omaha Lancers (1-0-0)
