St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (May 22, 2009) - With the St. Paul Saints big bat, Craig Brazell, heading to Japan, other players stepped up on Friday night as they slugged two homers and got great pitching to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 5-2 at Midway Stadium in front of 5,031.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the fourth Brent Krause led off with a single. Two batters later Jacob Butler smoked a pitch over the left field wall, a two-run shot, his first of the year giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.

Saints starter Mitch Wylie was on top of his game and had his sinker working. After allowing an unearned run in the first, he struck out the side in the second and had six strikeouts through three innings. He retired eight in a row heading into the sixth. He made one mistake in the inning to the lead off hitter Beau Torbert who hit a solo homer to left, his first of the season, which tied the score at two. After loading the bases with one out, Wylie was able to get out of the inning by getting a ground ball double play off the bat of Tim Hutting. Wylie went 6.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven.

The Saints took the lead for good in the seventh when Tony Mansolino began the inning with a single to left. He moved to second on a passed ball and went to third on Chris Herbert's fly out. Andrew Schmiesing then hit a fly ball to center which Hutting lost in the lights and the ball went over his head and to the wall allowing Herbert to score and Schmiesing stood at third with a triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Ron Fenwick.

The Saints finished off their scoring in the eighth on a solo homer by Daron Roberts, his first of the season.

The Saints bullpen finished it off as Kyle Foster went 2.0 hitless innings walking one and striking out two as he picked up the win. Kerry Ligtenberg picked up the save working a perfect ninth.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Brandon Kintzler (1-0, 1.35) to the mound against Canaries RHP Angelo Morales (0-0, 7.36). The game can be seen on KSTC-TV, Channel 45 and heard on Relevant Radio 1330. It is a celebration of 40 years of Sesame Street with the first 2,500 fans receiving the Norm Coleman/Al Franken "Re" Count dolls. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
