Sioux City Explorers News Release
Sioux City.....The Sioux City Explorers couldn't hold a late inning lead and lost their home opener 7-5 to Wichita at Lewis and Clark Park.
The Explorers had taken a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Walter Young with the second run scoring on the play when Wichita left fielder Greg Porter committed a throwing error to allow the second run to score.
However, Wichita took the lead for good in the eighth inning on a two-out walk to Michael Thompson followed by a single by Zach Goldberg that tied the score at 4-4. The Wingnuts scored two more runs on a single by Nick Blasi that gave Wichita a 6-4 advantage.
The Explorers scored a run in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-5, but left the bases loaded when Derek Schmerhorn flied out to right field to end the threat.
With the loss, Sioux City drops to 3-5 and have now lost four straight while the division leading Wingnuts are now 6-2.
The second game of the three-game series is set for Saturday at Lewis and Clark Park with game time 7:05pm.
