Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Paul, MN - Late runs propelled the St. Paul Saints (4-4) past the Sioux Falls Canaries (3-5) on Friday night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, MN.
The Canaries got a run thanks to a Saints miscue in the top of the first inning. J.D. Reininger and Trevor Lawhorn opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Beau Torbert struck out, Cory Harris hit a groundball to Saints third baseman Brent Krause. Krause misplayed the grounder, and as the ball kicked off his glove out into shallow left field, Reininger came in to score. After a half inning, the Canaries led 1-0.
St. Paul took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one on, Jacob Butler hit his first home run of the year to give the Saints a 2-1 advantage.
The Birds tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Beau Torbert hit his first home run of the season to tie the game, 2-2.
The Saints went ahead to stay in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tony Mansalino blooped a single into shallow left field to reach base at the start of the inning. Mansalino took second on a passed ball, and advanced to third on a flyout by Chris Herbert. With Mansalino on third and one out, Andrew Schmiesing came to the plate. Schmiesing hit a fly ball to center field that was lost in the lights by Canaries centerfielder Beau Torbert. The ball sailed over Torbert's head for a triple, allowing Mansalino to score for a 3-2 lead. Schmiesing scored on a sacrifice fly by Ron Fenwick, and the Saints added an insurance run on a Daron Roberts home run in the eighth for the 5-2 final.
Kyle Foster (1-0) pitched two shutout innings of relief to get his first win of the year. Ben Moore (0-2) gave up four runs on nine hits while striking out nine in the loss. Kerry Lightenberg pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
The Canaries and Saints will continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return home for a Memorial Day Matinee on Monday. The 3:05 p.m. game against the Fort Worth Cats will be preceded by a half-hour performance on the field by the Sioux Falls Municipal Band. The Sioux Falls Municipal Band will take the field at 2:15 p.m. on Monday.
