St. Paul Saints News Release
GARY, IN (June 17, 2011) - Manager George Tsamis is going to put out an APB for his offense because for the fifth time in seven games they collect five hits or less and wound up losing 2-1 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
The Saints offense managed just five hits and their first big chance to score came in the fifth inning. Richard Mercado singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Jonathan Van Every. Adam Frost, however, hit a grounder to third baseman Chris Carrara and Mercado broke to the plate, but got caught in a rundown and was tagged out. Justin Snyder then hit a liner right at the first baseman Mike Rhode to end the inning.
With the Saints trailing 2-0 in the seventh Brandon Tripp clubbed a solo homer to right, his fifth of the season.
In the ninth the Saints made a little noise when Jason Cooper singled to center with one out. With two outs Ronnie Bourquin walked, but closer Travis Minix got Mercado to pop out to end the game.
Saints starter Matt Long had a solid performance wasted as he went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four. Unfortunately, runs in the first two innings were enough to do him in.
In the first inning he loaded the bases with nobody out when Adam Klein doubled, Mike Massaro walked and Brad Boyer singled. Long then got Cristian Guerrero to pop out, but Lorenzo Scott's sacrifice fly gave the Railcats a 1-0 lead. Long ended the inning by getting Kyle Haines to fly out.
In the second inning Mike Rhode led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single from Klein.
Long settled down after that and threw 114 pitches, 66 for strikes, but fell to 4-2 on the season.
The third game of the four game series is Saturday evening at U.S. Steel Yard at 6:10 p.m. The Saints send LHP Donald Brandt (3-1, 3.89) to the mound against Railcats LHP Carlos Rivas (0-0, 3.60). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
