Late Wichita homerun defeats Amarillo 8-6

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Sox went back and forth with the Wichita Wingnuts all Friday night, but the Wingnuts got a two-run homerun in the ninth to give them the win over the Sox 8-6 in front of 4,246 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.

Sox reliever Chad Povich (2-2) got the loss, allowing the go-ahead homerun in the ninth inning. Wingnuts reliever Jared Simon (2-1) got the win, allowing just one unearned run in two and a third innings pitched. Wichita closer Josh Dew got his ninth save in the effort.

The Wingnuts took a second inning lead as Juan Richardson singled and went to third on a Jorge Delgado double. Richardson would score on a one-out single by Edwin Bellorin while Delgado would score on a fielder's choice by Mike Conroy to give Wichita a 2-0 lead.

Amarillo responded in the bottom of the second as Van Pope doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Chris Nash sacrifice fly. Benji Johnson followed with a single while Jason White walked. Fehlandt Lentini followed with a double to the right-center field gap to score both runners and give the Sox a 3-2 advantage.

Wichita retook the lead in the fourth as Delgado singled, followed by a Josh Workman double. Bellorin again hit an RBI single to score Delgado, while Jose Duran hit a fielder's choice to score Workman. Josh Horn followed with an RBI double to score Duran for a 5-3 Wingnuts lead.

Amarillo tied the game in the fifth as Lentini walked and scored on an Adam De La Garza RBI triple. Cyle Hankerd followed with a sacrifice fly to score the tying run at 5-5.

The Wingnuts retook the lead in the seventh inning on a Horn solo homerun, while Amarillo tied the game in the seventh as De La Garza reached second on an error. Following a groundout to move him to third, Pope singled to score De La Garza and tie the game.

Povich came in for the ninth and allowed Duran to hit a leadoff double. With two outs and a 1-1 count, Brent Clevlen hit a two-run homerun to give the Wingnuts the lead.

Amarillo put runners on the corners, but could not score in the ninth to fall to Wichita 8-6.

With the loss, the Sox fall to 15-18 while the Wingnuts improve to 20-14. Saturday, Amarillo will take on Wichita for the third game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm.
