Wichita Wingnuts News Release
AMARILLO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts won 8-6 over the Amarillo Sox at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium on Friday night.
Brent Clevlen hit a tie-breaking home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning that gave Wichita its fourth and final lead of the night. Jose Duran opened the inning with a double into the right field corner against Sox' reliever chad Povich. Duran was then sacrificed to third by Josh Horn. After Povich retired Ryan Patterson on a groundball to second with the infield in, Clevlen crushed his second home run in as many nights over the 30-foot fence in right-center.
In the bottom of the ninth, Josh Dew struck out Adam De La Garza looking for the first out, but back-to-back singles from Cyle Hankerd and Lee Cruz put the tying runs on base. Van Pope pulled a line drive down the third base line that Juan Richardson lunged at and caught backhanded. With Hankerd off the bag, Richardson then scrambled to third and slammed his glove atop the base to end the ballgame.
Wichita took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the top of the second. With second and third and one out, Edwin Bellorin hit a popfly single to shallow right that broke off the glove of Tim Alberts and gave Wichita their first run. Mike Conroy beat out a potential double play groundball at first, allowing Josh Workman to score from third to make it 2-0.
Amarillo took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chris Nash hit a sacrifice fly to put the Sox on the board. With two outs and no one on base, Benji Johnson Singled and Jason White walked. Both came around on Fehlandt Lentini's two-run double to right-center.
A three-run rally for the Wingnuts in the fourth moved Wichita back in front. Edwin Bellorin tied the game with an RBI single to center. Wichita re-gained the lead when Jose Duran beat out another potential double play groundball that brought in Workman. Horn drove in the Wingnuts' third run of the night with a two-out double off the left-center field fence.
An RBI triple from De La Garza and a sacrifice fly from Hankerd tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
Horn led off the top of the seventh with a home run that bounced off the top of the scoreboard in left field, but the Sox scored an unearned run in the bottom half to even the score again.
Jared Simon earned the win in relief, working two and one-third innings without allowing an earned run. Twice in the game, Simon retired Lentini with two outs and the go-ahead run on second base. The save for Dew was his ninth of the season.
Junior Guerra started and allowed five earned runs in five and two-thirds innings. Guerra struck out five, walked four, and allowed eight hits in a no-decision.
Sox' starter Ryan Mitchell also took a no-decision. Mitchell allowed six earned runs on 12 hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
The series continues Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Ryan Hinson opposes right-hander Colin Allen. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
