Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, LA.---Shreveport-Bossier manager Vince Moore spent the last few minutes of batting practice Friday afternoon working with Palmer Karr Jr. at home plate. The tutelage paid off big for the Captains against Fort Worth later that night when Karr hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to propel Shreveport-Bossier to a 7-5 win over the Cats at Fair Grounds Field.

Karr's blast, his third of the year, put the Captains up 7-4, breaking a tie game and setting up starter Richard Salazar (2-2) for his first win since Opening Day May 11. Salazar went seven innings, his longest start of the year, and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five. Dan Griffin blew threw the Cats in the ninth, striking out the side to pick up his ninth save, tied for most in the league.

Fort Worth took the lead early when catcher Kelley Gulledge hit a solo homer to left with two out in the first. In the third, the Cats would extend the lead on a two-run single by first baseman Trent Lockwood. Shreveport-Bossier would take the lead though in the fourth off Cats starter Dwayne Pollok (0-2).

Andrew Kuhn led off the inning with a walk. Then Brian Peterson and Alex Cowart hit back-to-back singles, the later scoring Kuhn to put the Captains on the board. Following a Mike Provencher sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out, Robert Perry hit an RBI single. Cowart would tie the game by scoring on a Pollok wild pitch and Andres Rodriguez would knock in Perry to give the Captains the 4-3 lead.

Travis Metcalf would again tag Salazar for a solo homer in the top of the fifth to tie the game, his third of the year. But the Captains would retake the lead for good on Karr's two-out blast in the fifth. Pollok had retired the first two Captains in the inning before Bryan Frichter doubled and Rodriguez drew a walk. Karr lifted Pollok's 1-1 offering over the wall in left-center to give the Captains the lead for good.

Fort Worth got one back in the eighth off Shreveport-Bossier reliver Jameson Maj, with a two-out RBI double off the bat of rightfielder Marcos Rodriguez, but two runs was as close as the Cats would get. Griffin's strike out of the side in the ninth gives him 17 strikeouts against just eight walks.

Karr led the way for the Captains offensively, going 3-for-4 with the home run and three RBIs. Andres Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Peterson was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Shreveport-Bossier played their second errorless game in three games and won their second straight for the first time in June to improve to 17-16 on the year.
