St. Paul Saints News Release

WICHITA, KS (July 25, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints will have two days to think about how the final four weeks of the season will go as they entered the All-Star break with an 8-0 loss to the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Saints mustered just six hits off of five Wingnuts pitchers and they only needed that many because starter Gabe Medina left the game in the fifth with an injury. The closest the Saints came to scoring was in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out on an infield single by Chad Gabriel and back-to-back walks to Ole Sheldon and Brent Krause. Gerard Haran, however, struck out and Josh Petersen fouled out to end the inning. Aside from that fourth inning the Saints only had two other innings in which a runner reached as far as second.

The Wingnuts offense started in the first off of starter Kyle Foster who gave up three straight singles to lead off the game to Joseph Spiers, Ryan Patterson and Jorge Cortes to make it 1-0.

The Wingnuts plated three more in the second as they sent nine men to the plate. Steve Pearson led off with a single and moved to second on a single from Michael Sharp. With one out Spiers singled home Pearson to make it 2-0. With runners at the corners Spiers stole second and Haran's throw skipped off the top of second baseman Brandon Carter's glove and went into center allowing Sharp to score making it 3-0. Patterson followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.

The Wingnuts put the game away in the fourth when Spiers reached on a fielding error by third baseman Petersen. With one out Jorge Cortes walked putting runners at first and second. Michael Bell followed with a double into left which scored two and Bell got caught between second and third, but Haran's throw to third wound up in left and Bell scampered around to score making it 7-0.

Foster went 4.0 innings allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Saints now take two days off for the All-Star break which is Tuesday night in Wichita at 7:05 p.m. The Saints will be represented by pitcher Jake Schmidt, outfielder Brent Krause and outfielder/first baseman Jason Cooper and can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330. The Saints next game is Wednesday night at Midway Stadium which begins a four game series against the Sioux Falls Pheasants at 7:05 p.m. It is "Pheasants for Dinner" Night as the first 2,500 fans in attendance receive a Saints hunting cap. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
