Saints Squeak Past Wingnuts in Ninth

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-2 to the St. Paul Saints at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.

Brent Krause hit a two-out, two-run, bases loaded single in the top of the ninth, breaking a 2-2 tie. Ole Sheldon led off the inning with a single to right-center. Brandon Carter sacrificed Sheldon to second. Jason Cooper was intentionally walked before Gerard Haran drew a walk to load the bases for Krause.

Matt Meyer pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth for the save.

The Saints scored a two-out run in both the second and third innings. Krause singled with one out in the second, stole second, and came around on Josh Petersen's RBI double down the left field line.

With two outs and no one on in the third, Chad Gabriel reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Wingnuts' starter Adam Cowart. Cooper grounded a single through the right side to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

Wichita tied the game with two in the fourth. Ryan Patterson tripled over the head of Alley in center field to leading off the inning. Jorge Cortes immediately drove Patterson home with an RBI single down the right field line. After Michael Bell walked, Cortes scored from second on a line drive single to center from Mario Delgado.

Cowart went five-plus innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out six and walking three in a no-decision. Ryan Morse took a no-decision for the Saints, allowing two earned in 5.2 IP.

Facing first and third and no outs in the sixth, Brandon Mathes and Dustin Pease teamed to retire the side without allowing the go-ahead run. After two Wingnuts' errors led to first and second with no outs for the Saints in the seventh, Pease combined with Jacob wiley to once again keep the game tied.

Wiley worked around a leadoff single in the top of the eighth before allowing Krause's single in the ninth to take the loss. Jonathan Plefka earned the win in relief for the Saints with a scoreless eighth.
