Wingnuts Roll into Break with Shutout

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts shutout the St. Paul Saints 8-0 on Sunday evening at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Five Wingnuts pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout, while eight of the nine Wingnuts' starters had at least one base hit.
The Wingnuts jumped on Saints' starter Kyle Foster in the first, collecting three hits before Foster ever recorded an out. Joseph Spiers led off with a single through the hole on the left, and moved to third on a hit-and-run single up the middle by Ryan Patterson. Jorge Cortes pulled a single through the right side to score Spiers and give the Wingnuts a 1-0 lead.
Foster escaped further trouble in the first, but the Wingnuts scored three more times in the second to increase their lead to 4-0. Steve Pearson and Michael Sharp hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. After Foster struck out Jake Bradshaw on a bunt attempt, Spiers singled through the right side to score Pearson and advance Sharp to third. Spiers then stole second base with catcher Gerard Haran's throw bouncing off of Brandon Carter's glove and into the outfield. The throw scored Sharp and allowed Spiers to go to third. Patterson capped off the inning with an RBI single to left.
The Wingnuts extended their lead again in the fourth. With first and second and one out, Michael Bell drove an opposite field double to right-center field to score two runs. Bell appeared to have been caught in a rundown between second and third, attempting to advance on Carter's relay to the plate. Haran's throw to third however, went wild into left field and allowed Bell to score the Wingnuts' seventh run of the game.
Gabe Medina pitched 4.1 scoreless innings before leaving with an injury suffered while covering first base. Brandon Mathes relieved Medina with 1.2 scoreless innings and was credited with the win. Cephas Howard, Dustin Pease, and J.R. Boling all contributed a scoreless inning in the victory. Foster took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, in four innings.
The Wingnuts added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Michael Bell.
It was announced Sunday that Nick Singleton will start Tuesday's All-Star Game for the North Division.
The Wingnuts next play on Thursday, July 29th, opening a four-game series at Pensacola. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
The Wingnuts host the University of Phoenix - Wichita Campus 2010 American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 27th.
