El Paso Wins Fourth Straight

El Paso, TX - In a back and forth affair the Pensacola Pelicans were able to hold off the Diablos 5-4 at Cohen Stadium on Sunday night. It brings to an end the Diablos four game winning streak as the Pelicans are able to take one out of the three games.

The teams would go back and forth throughout the game with neither team holding more than a one run lead. El Paso would take the lead first on a Kyle Nichols sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Pelicans tied the game the very next half inning and then took the lead in the fifth. That lead didn't last long either as the Daiblos tied the game in the very next half inning on another sacrifice fly by Nichols. Pensacola took another one run lead in the sixth and again the Daiblos came back the next half inning but this time they took the lead by scoring two runs. Hector Bernal had an RBI single and Arnoldo Ponce had a sacrifice fly. The trend continued though as Pensacola tied the game the next half inning. The trend would come to an end come the eighth inning when the Pelicans would score and the Diablos would not be able to respond.

J.D. Reininger had a huge night going 4-5 with three doubles including a double with one out in the ninth inning to get the tying run in scoring position. Hector Bernal enjoyed another two hit night going 2-5 with an RBI to extend his hit streak to 13 straight. Benji Johnson went 2-4 with a double to collect his fifth straight two hit game.

Shaun Ellis made the start and pitched great but got a no decision. He gave the Diablos a quality start going six innings and allowing three runs, only two of which were earned. He allowed just five hits and three walks. Pelicans' starter Austin Quinn would pitch into the sixth inning allowing four runs on nine hits before giving way to the bull pen. Ron Hill came in and shut down the Diablos' offense. Hill finished the sixth and then pitched two more scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to get the win.

El Paso now will take a three day break for the All Star game. They will start up play again on Thursday night at Grand Prairie. Game time is set for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning to ESPN 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
