El Paso Wins Fourth Straight

El Paso, TX - The El Paso won their fourth straight game as they took down the Pensacola Pelicans 9-3 at Cohen Stadium on Saturday night. The four game winning streak is the longest of the season for El Paso as they are now set up to go for the sweep over the division leading Pelicans.

The Pelicans struck first with two runs in the first inning but the Diablos would respond by scoring eight straight runs starting in the second inning. Two came in on a Hector Bernal two RBI double to tie the game in the second inning. El Paso scored a run to take the lead in the third inning on a Benji Johnson RBI single. The lead was extended to 8-2 after the fifth. The Diablos scored two in the fourth on a Kyle Nichols two RBI single and added three more in the fifth with Bernal and Mike Provencher both driving in a run in the inning. The Pelicans scored one run in the seventh but El Paso scored the final run of the night on a Rico Santana single in the eighth.

Aaron Kalb (2-4) was terrific as he picked up his second win of the season. He pitched seven innings and allowed just three runs on nine hits. Kalb allowed two runs in the first on two hits and three walks but then settled down and threw five straight shut-out innings before giving up a run in the seventh. Pelicans' starter Dane DeValk (5-6) would not make it out of the fourth inning as he allowed five runs on five hits and four walks.

El Paso was once again led on offense by Hector Bernal who went 4-6 with a double and three RBI. He extends his hit streak to 12 straight and it is also his eighth multi-hit game in that span. Benji Johnson and Rico Santana both went 2-4 with a RBI with Johnson also adding a double on the night.

El Paso can go for the sweep on Sunday. It is the final game of the home stand and also the final game before the All-Star break. Shaun Ellis (8-2, 4.64) is set to start the game against Austin Quinn (3-2, 5.13). Game time is set for 6:05. It is Quartermania as the Diablos offer 25 cent hot dogs and ice cream sandwiches.
