St. Paul Saints News Release
Gary, IN - The St. Paul Saints couldn't come up with the timely hits as they fell in the opener of a four game set to the Gary Southshore Railcats on Saturday night in front of 7,732 fans at U.S. Steelyard. Pending the outcome of the Wichita Wingnuts-El Paso Diablos game (check americanassociationbaseball.com for updates), the Saints will either be tied for the wild card or one game back with three games to play.
The Railcats executed their fundamentals like they have all season, striking right away off Saints starter Julio DePaula in the first inning. An RBI groundout by Cristian Guerrero and a two out RBI hit from Rico Washington gave Gary Southshore the 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Mike Massaro, who pounded out five hits on the night, drove in a run in the second to boost the Gary lead to 3-0. After the leadoff man reached in the third for the Railcats, Julio DePaula threw the ball towards first base on a bunt by Chris Carrara, but no one covered the base. The ball went into right field, allowing Rico Washington to score and make it 4-0.
Adam Frost hit a solo homer in the third to make it 3-1 and then drew a bases loaded, two out walk in the fourth to make it 4-2.
The Saints had no answers in the later innings. Trailing 4-2 after four innings of play, the Saints stranded men in scoring position in the fifth, seventh, and eight innings. The Gary Southshore bullpen, including TJ Wohlever, James Baker, Jorge Martinez, Will Krout, Travis Miniz, and Andy Shipman, threw 5.1 innings of shutout ball. They gave up three hits and struck out two.
Shane Costa and Richard Mercado both had two hits apiece for the Saints.
Julio DePaula went 6.0 innings yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks, while striking out six. He received the loss, with his record now standing at 1-1 on the season. Bret Severtson tossed 2.0 innings of one run ball, allowing four hits and a walk, while recording two strikeouts.
These two squads meet on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. in the 98th game of the season. The Saints will send RHP Todd Mathison (0-0, 10.29) to the bump and Gary Southshore will counter with RHP Ryne Reynoso (5-5, 6.15). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
