Wichita Wingnuts News Release

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the El Paso Diablos 19-2 at Cohen Stadium on Saturday night.

Gary SouthShore beat St. Paul 5-2 at U.S. Steel Yard, leaving the Wingnuts in a first place tie with the RailCats for first place in the Central Division. Both Wichita and Gary now hold a 1.0 game lead over the Saints for the wild card. All three teams are down to their final three games.

Juan Richardson tied an American Association record with six base hits, and tied a Wingnuts' club record with seven RBI. The Wingnuts racked up 27 hits in the win, setting a new team single-game record, and falling one hit shy of the American Association's single-game mark. Wichita's previous high was 23 hits, set at Cohen Stadium on June 3rd, 2009. 10 different Wingnuts had at least one hit in the victory, while seven had at least two. Eight Wingnuts had at least one RBI.

Wichita scored three early runs against Diablos' starter Adam Rowe. Jimmy Mojica led off the game with a double down the right field line. Mojica took third on a wild pitch and scored on Josh Horn's RBI single to right-center. Richardson singled Horn to third on a line drive to left-center. Rowe retired the next two hitters, but Mitch Einertson made it 3-0 Wingnuts with a two-out, two-run single to center field.

Horn led off the top of the third with a triple to right center. Richardson knocked in Horn on the next pitch with an RBI single through the left side.

In the top of the fourth, Josh Workman doubled down the left field line and scored two batters later on Mike Conroy's line drive single to right-center. After Mojica flied out to right, Horn singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Rowe was relieved by Gilbert Tussey who allowed an RBI single to center from Richardson that made it 6-0.

The Wingnuts broke the game open for good with a nine-run, nine-hit top of the fifth. Jorge Delgado led off with a line drive single to right and went to third on Einertson's single to left-center. Workman drove in Delgado with a groundball single up the middle that also moved Einertson to third. Edwin Bellorin hit a groundball to third that he beat out for an infield RBI single to give Wichita an 8-0 lead.

Conroy hit into a force play that put runners on first and second with one out. Mojica followed with a line drive single to center that scored Workman. After Horn walked to load the bases, Richardson hit a first-pitch grand slam off of Tussey to left-center field. Later in the inning, Workman capped off the rally with a two-out, two-run double to left-center.

Richardson hit a two-out, RBI double to straightaway center field in the top of the seventh that drove in the Wingnuts' 16th run of the night.

In the eighth, Wichita scored three more. Third baseman Martin Parra committed an error that plated Tommy Fitzgerald. Delgado and Einertson also had RBI in the inning.

Marcos Tabata earned the win, going five-plus shutout innings. Tabata allowed only two hits, walked one, and struck out two. Tabata was removed after one pitch in the bottom of the sixth due to an apparent injury.

Logan Hoch worked two scoreless relief innings, while Geivy Garcia pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth. Jared Simon allowed two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth before retiring Kory Drew on a flyout to center field that ended the game.

Rowe took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in three and two-thirds innings. Rowe walked none and struck out two.

Horn and Einertson each had four-hit games, while Delgado, Workman, and Conroy each collected three hits.

The series continues Sunday evening at 7:05 p.m. Central Time. Derek Blacksher faces right-hander Luis Montano. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
