Winnipeg 9, Fargo-Moorhead 5
The Goldeyes sealed the North Division crown Friday with a 9-5 win over Fargo-Moorhead with help from Sioux City, who defeated St. Paul, 2-0. Winnipeg scored eight runs in the first three innings and never trailed en route to the victory, the club's 58th win of the year. Goldeyes RF Kody Kaiser hit his 10th home run of the year batting second to highlight his 2-for-5, four-RBI night. The Goldeyes led by as many as six runs and tallied six extra-base hits. Winnipeg DH Jon Weber accounted for two of those, belting a pair of doubles and batting in a run on his 3-for-5 night. RedHawks 3B C.J. Retherford batted in all five of the team's runs, the first two on a third-inning two-run homer.
Sioux City 2, St. Paul 0
Explorers starting pitcher Nick Schumacher faced two more than the minimum, throwing a two-hit, 2-0 shutout against St. Paul on Friday. Schumacher struck out only three Saints batters, but the Sioux City defense had an error-free game behind him to help ensure the victory. The Explorers were also scoreless through seven but got a run in both the eighth and ninth innings to take the victory. The eighth-inning score came via a 3B Brian Bistagne double. Bistagne walked once and went 1-for-2. Sioux City DH Brett Flowers went 2-for-4 with a run scored, matching the number of hits by the entire St. Paul lineup.
Grand Prairie 4, Shreveport-Bossier 0
AirHogs starting pitcher Jason Jennings had another stellar performance Friday night. The former Major Leaguer threw a complete-game three-hitter and struck out eight Captains batters to take his 10th win of the year. Grand Prairie went on top with a second-inning Joey Gomes RBI single and only added runs to the lead from there. Gomes went 2-for-4, trailing only 3B Cesar Nicolas in hits. Nicolas went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Jennings' ERA now stands at 3.59.
Wichita 6, Amarillo 4
The Wingnuts offense piled up 10 hits and scored in five separate innings to take a 6-4 win over Amarillo. Wichita DH Jorge Delgado went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, bringing his season average to .329. Wichita scored one run in the first, second and third innings to slowly but surely take a sizable advantage over the Sox. Sox SS Jason White was the only Amarillo player with more than one hit, as he went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. He also struck out twice.
Kansas City 6, Sioux Falls 1
T-Bones CF Keanon Simon hit two doubles and a triple in the leadoff position to power the Kansas City offense past Sioux Falls, 6-1. On the mound, starting Kansas City pitcher Brian Grening went six innings and allowed one run on four hits to earn his first win with the T-Bones. Grening had a 5-2 record with Gary SouthShore before coming to Kansas City. Sioux Falls cut a 2-0 lead in half in the top of the sixth inning when DH Mark Shorey scored RF Gus Milner on a sacrifice fly. Shorey walked once and went 1-for-2 in addition to his sac fly. Sioux Falls CF Reggie Abercrombie tied Simon for the game high in hits, going 3-for-4.
Gary SouthShore 12, Lincoln 1
Already leading, 5-1, in the eighth inning, the RailCats put any doubts to rest by plating another seven runs and taking a 12-1 victory one frame later. Gary SouthShore racked up 15 hits, nearly doubling Lincoln's eight, and four separate RailCats batters had at least two base knocks. Leading the way, CF Mike Massaro went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Starting Gary SouthShore pitcher Scott Shaw got his 11th win of the year after tossing six innings and allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Lincoln 1B/SS Curt Smith scored the club's only run and went 2-for-4 to tie for the team high in hits. With Gary SouthShore winning along with Wichita, the RailCats and Wingnuts are tied for the Central Division lead with four games remaining.
Fort Worth 4, El Paso 3
The Cats and Diablos played a tight contest Friday night. And though El Paso never led, the club did manage to tie the score at three in the sixth and prevent starting Fort Worth pitcher Daniel Schmidt from factoring in the decision. Cats 2B Aljay Davis scored three of his team's runs, walking twice and reaching on a second-inning error. Batting ninth for Fort Worth, CF Clifton Thomas knocked in two of the Cats' runs, going 3-for-4 to lead all players in hits. El Paso RF Nelson Teilon batted in two of the team's three runs to highlight a 2-for-4 night.
