
Calhoun Leads Ft. Worth With Five Hits, Cats Beat Captains 15-1

FT. WORTH, Tx.---Ft. Worth third baseman Will Calhoun went 5-for-6 and the Cats put up seven runs in the sixth inning to hand the Captains their fifth straight loss, 15-1 at LaGrave Field in Ft. Worth Saturday night. Cats starter Wade Mackey (W, 8-5) allowed just five baserunners as Ft. Worth outhit the Captains 24-4.
Ft. Worth scored seven times in the sixth, at one point in the inning putting 10 men in a row on base. Calhoun hit singles in his first five at bats but came up one hit short of tying the American Association hits record when he struck out against Jose Velazquez in the seventh inning.
The Cats got on board in the first against Captains starter Osvaldo Rodriguez (L, 5-7) with an RBI double from John Allen followed by a two-run single off the bat of Clifton Thomas. Rodriguez went five innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits while walking four and striking out seven and throwing 113 pitches.
Aljay Davis, Steve Vranau and Calhoun all drove in runs in the third to put Ft. Worth up 6-0. Shreveport-Bossier, who managed just four hits in the game, would plate their only run in the fourth when Chad Gabriel scored on a Palmer Karr Jr. fielder's choice grounder. The Captains have now scored just six runs in their last five games.
Mackey went seven strong, giving up one run on four hits while walking none and striking out three to improve to 3-1 in five starts against the Captains this season.
Ft. Worth pulled away in the sixth off Captains reliever Mark Haynes. Davis started off the scoring with a two-run double. Vranau knocked in Cory Morales, who had walked earlier in the inning, making it 10-1. Calhoun, Marcos Rodriguez, Kelley Gulledge and Trent Lockwood would all add one-out RBI singles to put Ft. Worth up by 13. Every Cats hitter but Rodriguez picked up two or more hits.
Captains third baseman Mike Provencher made his debut on the pitcher's mound, allowing one unearned run in the bottom of the eighth while surrendering two hits, walking one and striking out two.
Calhoun finished the night 5-for-6 with a run and three RBIs. John Allen was 4-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two walks, reaching base safely all six times he came to the plate. Vranau was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs. Davis went 2-for-3 with three runs and four batted in. Gulledge added three hits, two runs and an RBI. For Shreveport-Bossier, Gabriel went 2-for-4 with the Captains only run.
Shreveport-Bossier drops to 44-53 with the loss, the first time this season they've been nine games under .500. The Captains are 17-30 on the road and have dropped five straight. With the win, the Cats have taken four of their last five and are 46-51 overall and 25-22 at LaGrave Field.
The series continues Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6:05 p.m. when Robert Bono (1-3, 9.78) takes the hill for the Captains against Ft. Worth righthander James Brandhorst (1-0, 7.66).
