St. Paul, MN- The Sioux Falls Canaries returned to action on Wednesday afternoon looking for their first series win of the season against a North Division opponent. Blake Schmit went 4-for-5 at the plate, but the Canaries offense lacked the big inning, falling to the St. Paul Saints by the final score of 7-4 at CHS Field.
Canaries starting pitcher Misael Siverio suffered his fourth loss of the season after giving up seven runs (five earned runs) on eight hits over 4.1 innings. The Cuban left-hander matched a season high with four walks while striking out three batters in the loss.
Siverio and the Birds' trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, before giving up a leadoff homerun to Saints outfielder Breland Almadova. The Saints would score two more runs in the inning, sending all nine batters to the plate.
Almadova also led off the top of the 4th inning, hitting a triple over centerfielder Ethan Chapman's head before stealing home to extend the Saints lead to 5-0.
The Birds' got on the come-back trail in the top of the 5th inning after Ryan Lashley reached base with a leadoff single, and Chapman reached base on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Nolan Johnson picked up his first professional RBI on a line drive single to centerfield.
The Canaries got the offense going again in the top of the 8th inning when Jake Taylor reached base on an error before David Bergin doubled to the gap in left-center, knocking Saints starting pitcher Mark Hamburger out of the game. Ozney Guillen brought Taylor home on a ground-out, with Lashley bringing home Bergin with an infield single off the pitchers leg.
Schmit has had a great series in St. Paul, going 7-for-10 with an RBI and three runs scored over the first two games of the series. The Edina, MN native is batting .459 against the Saints in nine games this season, going 17-for-37 with three doubles, two homeruns and five RBI.
Hamburger improved to 7-0 after holding the Canaries offense to four runs (one earned run) on eight hits over 7 innings. Thielbar watched his ERA drop to 1.67 after allowing one hit over one inning of work. Closer Ryan Rodebaugh earned his 9th save of the season after striking out two batters in one shutout inning.
The Canaries return to Sioux Falls Stadium on July 4th to open up a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones. Come out to the Birdcage on Monday night for a special Independence Day game with lots of excitement going on at the ballpark all game long.
