RailCats Leave Nine on Base in 2-1 Loss to Goldeyes

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

WINNIPEG, MB, CANADA - The RailCats offense sputtered late and was unable to mount a comeback in the second game of the series with Winnipeg. The Goldeyes (20-19) scored two runs in the 4th inning to stay alive in the series with the RailCats (21-17).

Charle Rosario was charged with the loss despite recording his fifth quality start of the season. The Cats' Ace went six innings and allowed just two runs on six hits. John Kovalik and Andy Roberts were solid out of the bullpen and kept Gary SouthShore within striking distance.

The RailCats and Manager Greg Tagert will point to the 4th and 9th innings as ones where the team failed to capitalize on good situations. The Cats had a 1-0 lead in heading into the 4th and Frank Martinez led off with a walk. Jeremy Hamilton then smacked a single off the wall and there were runners on the corners. Jose Gonzalez bunted but Martinez was unable to come home. The next batters, EJ Devarie and Jarred Mederos , were retired without getting a run in.

The 9th inning went similarly for the RailCats. Matt Petrone drew a pinch-hit walk to start the inning. He stole second base and Devarie moved him over to third base on a fielder's choice. Then, Mederos struck out and Cameron Newell grounded out to end the game.

The Goldeyes got key hits in the 4th inning to put two runs on the board. Carter McEachern doubled with two outs to pull Winnipeg even in the game. The next batter for the Goldeyes, Ridge Hoopii-Haslam, tripled in McEachern to give them the 2-1 lead.

Duke Von Schamann pitched well for Winnipeg and earned the win after pitching six innings. Jailen Peguero shut down the Cats in the 9th to register the save.

Brennan Metzger had a two-hit day including a double and an RBI single. Roberts came through with clutch strikeouts to get the Cats out of jams. He appears to be a reliable pitcher to put into difficult situations as he is making a habit of getting the clutch strikeout. The RailCats are now 1-15 when trailing after seven innings and 0-15 when trailing after eight.

The RailCats look to win their fifth straight series in the rubber match with Winnipeg tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7:00 PM and coverage begins at 6:35 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
